and so life goes on...even for the unfortunate
Went to give out bags of rice today!! With the Leo club la, duh. Hahahahaha...we handed them out at Block 12, which is just opposite my block. And for the first time in my entire life, I experienced the wide income gap between the rich and the poor of Singapore...Block 12 is a
one-room flat. And just beside it, is my housing estate. Which are executive blocks...translating to about
six rooms per unit. Plus, on the other side of Block 12, and over the hill, are all the terraces...private estates la. It's amazing man!!! This small plot of poverty in the middle of luxury. So saddening.
Anyway. The lifts were upgraded and all...we all had to carry bags of rice, weighing 10 kg each, to give to each household. It's like all the residents were so happy and excited to receive the rice la...standing at the door peering out and smiling and chatting...I've never seen such comaradrie amongst nighbours before la. Brings back naunces of the kampong spirit of old. Some of them even stay with their neighbours...then the extra house can use for storing stuff??
They all thanked us profusely for the rice...like it's a godsend. In a sense, it is, (it's sponsored by Song He) but just across a field in the neighbouring block, people take rice for granted. Girls abstain from eating rice "cos carbs make me fat", maids cook too much of it and have to throw some away EVERY SINGLE DAY. And for these people I helped, rice is worth it's weight in gold. WOW. It sure made me feel like a damn selfish person. Thank goodness I never waste rice. I love rice.
(:The coridors were dark and gloomy, stank of urine?? Sweat?? And you could see whole families sleeping in the living room on the sofa and on the floor. I think they only have a toilet, a kitchen and the living room or something...It's really sad la...and yet the residents were all still so cheerful, calling out to each other along the corridor, and the children opening the door so trustingly to me. I really must start appreciating my very own room, my spacious bed, and abundance of food man...
